CD's and Children

I've just had a thought. Well I get a few of those, but this one has me pondering.

When I was a child, part of what introduced me to classical music were the CD's my parents had. They didn't have a huge collection, just a few of the compilation CD's that I picked up and played. I didn't do this often, but I listened enough to learn a bit about Tchaikovsky and Beethoven, Mozart et al through their famous pieces.

Now that CD's are becoming less common in favour of mp3's I wonder how children can do the same thing I did. They would have to physically use their parents mp3 player or computer to listen, and that to me seems less likely to happen.

All this depends on people having classical music in their collection anyway, in whatever format. Television has now classical music channels and maybe these are a way to introduce some children to classical music, given a child's need for visual impetus: short and sweet pieces, perfect for when channel surfing between breaks in programmes.

Why are there no classical concerts in Hull over christmas?

Why are there no classical concerts on in Hull over christmas? This is one of the few times of the year that I get a chance to go back to Hull and visit my family. I've just looked to see whats on and there is nothing remotely to do with classical music playing in Hull. All the people of Hull have to enjoy, primarily at the City Hall are:

Les Grays MUD (WHO??)
A T-REX tribute band
And a fantastic new music show starring Lulu, Chaka-Khan and Anastacia, erm though it doesn't say whether the real musicians will all be appearing, I very much doubt it.

Tomorrow there will be carols by the Hull Choral Union, which presumes that choral singing (outside of a church) does exist in Hull, well I never.

There is a bright beacon of hope though, in the new year, on the 15th of January the Halle will be playing at City Hall, its just a pity it will be too late for me. One of these days I will attend a classical concert in Hull, if only to satisfy my curiosity whether all attendees will have arrived using their free bus passes or not. I wouldn't normally have said that most people who go to hear classical concert are over the 50 mark, but in Hull, I would say it's truer than most places. Unfortunately

My apologies, I almost finished this, forgetting to mention that Status Quo will also be in Hull on the 19th, Rockin all over the World, including the people of Hull for the night. Pity I'll still be in London then, though it's a sell out apparently.

So which is the best orchestra?

This article by Paul Jansser in The Guardian gives a sound judgement on the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and declares them the worlds best orchestra, so given the article below about the Berliner Phil, which is the best?? Without a doubt the the royal concertgebouw is acoustically speaking one of the best concert halls, so does this make their playing better or just better on the ear to listeners?

Anyway, for more info on who officially the Worlds best Orchestra is see Tom Service's in blog posting in the Guardian.

While I'm at it, I found this listing on about.com  of the 10 best concert halls in the world. I couldn't believe they didn't include the Royal Concertgebouw!
